We’ve got lots of ideas for gifts for chicken lovers!

First, a Freebie

Let’s start off with something free that is always appreciated by chicken owners! This free thing is….egg cartons! â€‹Yes, everyone who has backyard chickens loves getting egg cartons. When we’ve got a flock of hens here, we are often over run with fresh eggs.

And we never seem to have enough egg cartons on hand. So if you are buying eggs (from the store or a farm stand) please save your empty cartons. Then, pass them along to your chicken loving friend – we can guarantee they will never turn them away!

Anyone with a backyard flock can always use extra egg cartons. Plus, they’re easy to store, so save your cartons to pass along!

Sloggers Chicken Lovin’ Boots – Made in the USA, they are a bit wider in the leg than regular rubber boots. This gives me plenty of room to tuck the legs of my jeans in without them bunching up.

They’re made from recycled rubber, they have awesome insoles and they work great in the mud.

Even better? If they EVER wear out, you just return them to Sloggers and they will recycle them into a new pair. What’s not to love about that?

I have the red chicken boots, just like the photo. They’re awesome!

Practical Gifts for the Prepper

By Annie

Planning on shopping online this week? Here’s a few great gifts for preppers, foodies or the homesteading honey in your home. There’s a few stocking stuffer ideas too!

Practical Gifts for Preppers

I’m still doing a lot of canning, but over the last couple of years we have started to dehydrate some of our food. Dehydrated packages and jars take up far less room than canning.

I can see dehydrating more and canning less as the years go by. You can get a small dehydrator like a Salton but they really don’t hold that much. Here’s the beauty we have.

I bought one and I love it. I use it for making apple chips and Rhubarb fruit leather. The Excalibur is a quality machine; it’s simply the best dehydrator on the market.

I had wanted one for years and I finally ordered one and I’m so glad I did. Next year I’ll be drying more of our vegetables for long term storage.

I’ve got the 9 tray unit with the timer. We fill it full every time we use it, although you can run it with just a few trays if you like.

One note: I notice they are selling clear doors for their units, which cost a bit more. I wouldn’t bother getting it; I would never go by just looking in there to see if the foods were dry.

You need to check the food – is it pliable? Dried to a crisp?

I would definitely spend more to get one with a timer; I appreciate that every time I use it!

The Most Essential Tool for Outdoor Life

Leatherman

How many times have I been down at the barn, only to find I need a pair of pliers to retwist the wires on some temporary fencing for the hens? Or need a screwdriver to tighten the strapping on our sprinkler lines?

Then, when I go to the barn tool cupboard, I can’t find what I need and end up walking back to the house to get what should have been down at the barn.

I don’t know about you, but when tools aren’t put back where they belong, I get totally frustrated. What a waste of time. Well, that doesn’t happen anymore! This is one of the most thoughtful gifts for preppers we have seen.

Anyone who lives in the country knows the power can go out during winter storms. Unless you live off grid and then you won’t even notice at all.

But for the rest of us, power outages can last hours. We have even had them last for days – not that it really matters too much to us.

As long as we don’t open freezers, we are fine. We’ve got heat from the woodstove, canned food in the pantry and handcranked lanterns.

Here’s an awesome tool to have when the power goes out (or for camping!).

Perfect Gift Ideas for Gardeners

By Annie

The gardening season might be winding down right now, but the holidays are now coming. And hey…if you love a gardener, we have just the thing you need. We’ve come up with a fantastic list full of perfect gift ideas for gardeners.

You won’t have any problem finding something (or 15 things!) on this list to make your gardener very happy. It’s full of wonderful gardening gifts for birthdays, anniversaries and Christmas.

Dedicated gardeners are always thinking of gardening. Some of us even think of next year’s garden while we are weeding this year’s garden!

The very thought of bulbs sprouting forth after the snow melts puts a smile on our face. We read seed catalogues cover to cover in January. More than once. Sometimes before we go to sleep.

We make lists of seeds to buy, tools to buy, perennial plants to order and then annual plants to stuff in all the empty spaces.

Any gardener would appreciate a thoughtful gift from this list! So, if you love a Gardener, indulge their passion for diggin’ in the dirt and check out our perfect gift ideas for gardeners.
