List of Supplies for Mini Book Ornaments

Materials for mini book ornaments on a wooden counter.
This craft requires simple supplies that are easy to find and work with.
  • 6 Tumbling Tower game pieces – This is a Dollar Store version of the game Jenga, but any game in this vein with wooden block pieces works fine. You’ll need 6 per ornament, but the games come with lots so you can make a whole bunch!
  • Antique White Matte Acrylic Paint – I used this Apple Barrel brand.
  • Small paint brush
  • Ribbon – Use a festive or holiday themed ribbon for a fun flair.
  • Twine
  • Glue gun w/ glue sticks
  • Scissors
  • Fine permanent marker or paint pen

Where to purchase supplies for mini ornaments:

The items you need to make these ornaments should be available at your local craft store like Michaels. You can also order online at Amazon.

How to Make Mini Book Ornaments – Tutorial

  1. Using the hot glue gun, carefully glue wood pieces together and press down to assure that they stick.

    Glueing together wooden blocks.
Don’t worry about lining up the blocks perfectly, they can be a little crooked for a more authentic look.
  2. Paint the blocks on all sides and let them dry. This could take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour.

    Painting glued wooden blocks.
Adding a layer of paint helps give the “books” a more cohesive look.
  3. Wrap a piece of ribbon around the wood pieces to measure and snip off. Carefully glue around the left side of the wood pieces and leave a little bit of the wood showing on the left side.
Gluing ribbon to wooden blocks for mini book ornaments.
Use your favorite holiday ribbon to customize these ornaments to your preference!

    Making the Bow

  4. Cut 10 small pieces of the fabric Christmas ribbon, about 1.5” (doesn’t have to be perfect). Using 9 pieces, turn them upside down and put a little hot glue on one side.

Placing a drop of hot glue on a piece of ribbon.
Use more pieces of the same ribbon to form a bow on the top of the ornament.
  5. Carefully join the other side to seal and form a little loop. See the photo below to show you how to glue the ribbon together.

Glued ribbon loops on a counter.
You’ll need 9 or 10 little ribbon loops for each bow.
  6. Using the last piece, make a continuous loop by adding glue to the edge of the print side of the ribbon and overlapping the other side, until you form a cylinder shape. (This is kind of of like when you join a piece of scotch tape together to make it double sided.)

Creating a bow with loops of ribbon.
This added detail gives your ornament an extra pop!
  7. Carefully glue the 9 loops across the top of the ribbon on the wood pieces. Line them up side to side. Add the remaining piece to the front to resemble a bow.

Adding twine to mini book ornament.
Add a piece of twine to the ornament to make sure you can hang it on your tree.
  8. Cut a piece of twine about 3-4 inches and glue both ends to the top part of the wood on the back to form a hanging loop to hang the ornament.

Gluing twine to the back of mini book ornaments.
If you want to use these as standing display pieces, you can leave off the hanger.
  9. Allow the ornament to dry. You can leave it as-is, or add wording to it as desired.

Expert Tips and Tricks

  • You don’t have to glue the wooden pieces perfectly straight. If you stagger them, the ornaments will look more like a stack of tiny books.
  • Use your favorite color paint to make it your own!
  • Using a craft stick can help to secure the pieces without burning your fingers.
  • If you want to make them really special and detailed, paint each block to look like spines of your favorite books. This can be the most tedious part, but will give your mini book ornaments lots of character and charm!
  • Feel free to use multiple coats of paint if you want a more opaque result. This might take longer as you’ll have to wait for each coat to dry properly.

Plus, they go perfectly with these DIY chalk painted mason jars to add just the right touch.

f Create a vintage style statement with this DIY farmhouse rope candle holder.

Farmhouse Candle Holders Supplies:

Supplies to make roped candle holder
Here’s what you’ll need to create your own diy farmhouse candle holder.
  • Tall cylinder vase
  • Jute Rope
  • Cotton Rope
  • Glue gun
  • Scissors
  • Pillar Candle

Note: You could use hemp rope instead of jute if you like.

The very first thing to do is assemble all your supplies. Plug in your glue gun to let it heat up. Always be careful when handling a glue gun!

Think about how high on the vase you want the rope to be. Take a look at the photo further down to get an idea of how high I went with the wrapped rope.

You may want to wrap the rope only a few times – depends on the look you’re going for!

Wind rope around the candle pressing it into the glue.
Begin wrapping the rope around the candle holder – work fast before the glue dries.

Unwind some of your jute rope and grab your hot glue gun. Start by applying a thin line of glue along the bottom of the vase.

Immediately start wrapping the jute rope over top the glue, going all the way around the vase. You will need to work quickly because the glue will start to dry fast once it has been applied to the vase.

Glue rope to vase with glue gun
Put hot glue on the cut end of rope so it won’t ravel.

Keep applying thin lines of glue and wrapping the rope around the vase to the desired height is reached. Cut the rope and cover that cut end well with hot glue to prevent it from raveling.

Wrap once around with cotton rope, then cut using scissors.
Use sharp scissors to cut the cotton rope after wrapping.

Next wrap one time around the vase with the cotton rope. Cut the end and immediately cover the cut end with hot glue to prevent raveling.

Decorating your candle holder

Now it’s time to style your farmhouse candle holder however you like!

Add greenery of your choice according to the seasons.

I’ve set a thick scented vanilla pillar candle inside the vase, then set it on a wood slab that still has its live edge. You can get these wood slices online.

Another way to display the roped candle would be to set it on a heavy galvanized metal candle holder!

Here’s my top picks for the best scented candles!

Farmhouse candle holder on a table
These candle holders would look lovely as wedding table centerpieces.

I added some greenery I got at the Dollar store and voila! Here it is. I can even change up the greenery and wood base according to seasons.

I think holly with its red berries would look great wrapped around the base for Christmas time.

I’m going to make more of these so I can have several different sets of these pretty farmhouse candle holders. They will look great along with our old country lantern in our living room! I’d like to have a couple on the kitchen counter too and really tie it all together.

These candle holders would make a great vintage style statement for a country wedding, a summer barbeque or a family reunion. Why not make a few for your next gathering?

See how easy it will be to make this DIY farmhouse rope candle holder? These would look great with a beach or coastal theme too!

Supplies needed to make these daisy flower mason jar vases:

(I’ve added a handy Amazon shopping guide below for everything you need)

  • Paint Brush
  • Mason Jar
  • Yellow acrylic matte paint (I got mine from Joann’s but you can find it here on Amazon)
  • Baking Soda
  • Waverly White Chalk Paint
  • Q-tip
  • Jute twine
  • Scissors
  • Plastic spoon for mixing and paper plate to mix on

DIY Chalk Paint Recipe

  • 1 TBSP baking soda
  • 2 TBSP acrylic paint (the ratio is always 2 to 1)

I ended up using 2 TBSP baking soda and 4 TBSP paint mixed together to cover the whole jar. The important thing to remember is that the ratio is always 2 parts paint to 1 part soda.

Ratio = 2 parts paint to 1 part baking soda

Instructions for Painting your Farmhouse Mason Jar:

Mix baking soda and paint together.
Mix together the baking soda and acrylic paint.

The first thing to do to get started is to mix together the baking soda and the acrylic paint. It will be a thicker consistency, which is just what you want. Mix really well.

Painting a mason jar with acrylic paint
Paint the mason jar and be sure to let it dry completely before adding another coat.

Next paint the mason jar, allowing for time to dry between coats. The drying time is important!

Pretty farmhouse decor for your country porch or kitchen.

If you don’t wait long enough the paint will come off in sections when it is drying. I applied 3 coats of the yellow paint, making sure to also paint the top of the jar.

Tip: Let the paint dry completely before adding another coat!

Wrapping jute twine around the mouth of the mason jar.
Wrap jute twine around and around the mason jar, finishing with a bow.

Use Jute Twine for a Country Touch

After the jar has been painted and is completely dry, it’s time to start wrapping your jute twin around the top of the jar. I wrapped it many times until the top of the jar was covered. Finish it off by tying the leftover string in a simple bow.

Use a Qtip and paint to paint daisies on mason jar.
Use a Qtip and chalk paint to paint daisies on mason jar.

Next using the Q-tip and Waverly white chalk paint, dip the top of the Q-tip into the paint and make a small circle on the jar (just dabbing it on will leave an open space in the middle of the dab).

Painting white circles to make a daisy on the jar.
Create little daisies on the mason jar, making as many as you like.

Then add 3 more circles with the Q-tip to create the daisy. Keep doing this around the jar until you have your desired look.

Tip: Don’t just dab; make an actual circle!

Allow to dry completely. Add some greenery and flowers and set it on display.

Here’s the finished chalk paint mason jar – I love it! Looks great sitting on a small wood slab on your counter or on a side table on your porch.

More Ways to Use Chalk Painted Mason Jars

Even though these jars would look beautiful on their own, here are a couple more ways you can use these DIY mason jar projects. Add a hanging string or wire to the jar and then hang from a wall bracket like this one for some country style wall decor.

Drop a tea light or a short thick jar candle inside, light it and you’ve got the perfect farmhouse style candle holders.

These pretty daisy mason jars would also look perfect at a farmhouse wedding – you could use 3 painted jars of different size on each guest table. Paint them using your wedding colours and then fill with wild flowers. Add a few tealights and a bit of fresh greenery and you’ve got a very pretty table center piece!

Weatherproof Plant Markers DIY – Cute & Creative Craft

By Annie

Make up some of these weatherproof plant markers for your garden this year!

If you’re looking for a fun and easy garden diy project, take a look at all of these fun ways to add some whimsey to your garden. It can be very easy to forget if “this is the row where I planted the rosemary seeds. . . or maybe it’s over there” – these markers are a wonderful help.

And to be fair, seedlings often look very similar to each other, especially when they are related.

These DIY weatherproof plant markers add whimsy to your garden!

Why You’ll Love These Weatherproof Plant Markers

If your garden is big enough, you may easily lose track of which squash variety is where, etc. Plant markers can be a tremendous help.

I collected together some really fun and unique ideas for markers. Some add a touch of glitter and some are just straight-up colorful. But each and every one of these ingenious creations will help you keep track of all those plants you are taking the time to care for and cultivate.

And they will look spectacular while they do it, with bursts of all sorts of colors! All of these markers are great for shrubs, plant pots, flower beds, in your container garden, even fruit trees!

Just be sure to use permanent marker pens when making these!

Gather them up at the end of the season, as it’s probably not best to just leave these outside year-round. Depending on your climate, the markers could start fading and begin to get weathered after a season of outdoor use.

Take a look through all these different garden row marker ideas! There are some wonderfully creative ideas here that will give you inspiration.

These also make great gifts for gardening friends! They are a lovely way to welcome visitors right into the garden to see these up close.

So instead of buying a gift on Etsy, why not choose a marker project or two and give a homemade gift.

What Kind of Paint is Best for Waterproof Garden Marker Project

It’s probably best to use a water-based acrylic paint based on its durability. It would not hurt to apply a coat of clear outdoor sealant as a top layer.

For writing, consider using a Sharpie’s Pro paint marker – it is very durable and will hold up to harsh weather. There are also a good variety of tip sizes to choose from.

Markers made with these materials will be durable enough, no matter where you live in Canada or the USA.

If you are just temporarily marking a plant, wax pencils or a grease pencil will work well. Read on for some very cute garden ideas for identifying your plants.
