A New Mud Room & Entryway

By Annie

Since we have always disliked the actual entry into our house from the driveway side, we’ve been talking about making some changes. That may include a new mud room and entry into the house.

The driveway side is of course where guests enter our house.

See what I mean? Ugly. Really. Ugly. I can’t wait until we rip off that little mud room that’s attached now to the house.

We’re thinking of eventually pushing the house out about 12 feet on that side of the house. This would mean the main floor bedroom could be enlarged (and it’s a small room, so it needs to be enlarged).

We would like to put a good sized closet in there, open the room up a little more and also put in sliding glass doors that would lead out onto the deck.

This addition will also mean we can have a nicer entryway into the house for guests. We also want to build a new mud room/wood storage/laundry room in part of the addition.

This will all be wonderful, although it is still a few years away. It will be quite a large project and we are already thinking of just “how” to get everything we want into the space.

I have been over to houzz.com and looking at entryway and mud rooms that can give us some ideas.

Here’s one that has almost all the components I want (and then some). I don’t think we need all the drawers on the left side, but I do really like the open shelves above the coatracks and bench.

We would probably do pine cabinetry and a wide pine plank for the bench. I’d like to include a half size shower area where we could clean boots (and dogs).

If we put a bench in there, we could come in with dirty feet from being barefoot outside and just clean our feet before going into the house. We would also need some firewood storage, maybe two weeks worth.

In our case, the outside door above would be a side door that we could use when carrying in groceries or working outside.

This room would need to connect to a front hall area (where guests would come in). I’d love to have a wood front door with at least one sidelight for the entry.

I can see a covered entry way using logs for posts and a rock walkway leading guests from the driveway to the front door.

I love thinking of home renovations and I’ll soon be putting up some pictures of some of the demolition we have been up to inside the house! It’s been a lot of fun.

In the meantime, I’ll be adding pictures of ideas to my Ideabook over on houzz. I love it over there!
